If you have the latest and greatest Avast running then effectively
you DO HAVE a firewall running, albeit not by name. The latest
versions of Avast have packed in so much more than the standard AV
software that they are in danger of becoming a "Norton AV" and
bloating themselves out of all reason. I would suggest disabling
everything but the standard AV features from the control panel. We
have seen similar "unusual side effects" here
Thank you Dave.
I don't *think* I have the Avast firewall running, but perhaps I am wrong.
I'm using Avast Endpoint Protection Plus. Program version is
8.0.1603, with the Small Office Administration (SOA) console. In the
console, for all machines, the "Network Shield" is turned off. That
shield is not running on clients; I can check those in the console,
both for machines that show up in network discovery and those that don't.
I can't find any specific references to "firewall" related to
Endpoint Protection Plus or the instructions for administering the
SOA. The impression I'm getting is that the firewall only exists in
the Premier or Internet Security versions of single-user Avast.
However, there are firewall configuration settings in the "Expert
Settings" dialog for the SOA--lots of them. I can't find any
information on what they mean or what they should be set to in order
to ensure that the firewall is off.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Ken
