I suspect we have all seen tens of thousands of web pages, most
mediocre or worse, while we've probably only seen hundreds of Windows
and DOS data entry screens, most mediocre or worse.

Whoa! Mediocre is one thing. Uninspired still does the job. It is the "or worse" that gets me. How people figure that a Webpage or app should be like that is beyond me.

UX is hard.

     No, UX is fairly easy at a basic level.

     I can deal with an uninspired Webpage or app.

     Inspired UX is can be very hard indeed.  I appreciate when I see it.

     I do not complain much about uninspired, but I detest horrid.
