Actually, that is almost the same as the old Packard-Bell Tech Support answer for pretty much anything that went wrong. Format the hard drive, then reinstall the O/S. Funny thing, other than the obvious (or not so obvious) impending data loss, it seemed to work for most ills with PB PCs.
