I never thought I'd write these words again, but I find myself installing XP on a box.
It's an IBM TP that came with XP originally installed, of course, and I've installed a variety of Linux distros on it over the years. Except for a flaky fan once in a while, it's been running fine. This week I want to experiment with dual booting Windows and Linux, mainly because I've never done it before. I believe that XP doesn't behave nicely as a second installation, so I'm going wipe the box by installing XP on it, and then repartitioning and putting Linux on the space I free up. I've got a CD that I burned from MSDN. I know the CD is good because I've installed XP from this CD into a VMware virtual machine several times. When I boot from scratch using the CD, however, I get a message "Hit any key to boot from CD." I do so. Then it spins the CD for a moment, and the Windows "Setup" message displays... "Setup is now inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" and goes blank. And just sits there. I've let it sit for 15 minutes and the screen just stays blank. The CD doesn't spin anymore... nothing. Ideas?
