I volunteered and enjoyed my 4 years of active duty immeasurably except for Basic Training and KP, which was sadistic and demeaning although it was a phrenologic holiday. I made lots of great friends, learned some neat skills, and did some computer stuff that had never been done before (or since). Active duty is the only way to go. If you are going to be in it, then be in it. That reserve crap is great as long as there is no war or similar activity. The reservists got to see the down-side of their deal and now a lot of them are pissed.
