Well I can only say that the movie, The Exorcist, was loosely-based on a real life event that happened to a boy. Almost every society has "evil spirits" as part of their belief system.
Additionally, evil spirits aside, there is more and more scientific proof to prove the existence of ghosts. Video, audio, and photographic evidence are now coming in large volume as more and more haunted houses are wired for video and web cams.
