Who knows. There are different theories. 1. Residual haunting - images and sounds are stored somehow in the surroundings, and are replayed like a video over and over again. There are reports where the same image appears in the same spot over and over again without changing. This could be merely a physical phenomena
2. Intelligent hauntings - ghosts interact with people, move objects, answer questions on audio. Now how much energy is required to move an object and what are the physics required to do it, is a mystery to me. Apparently "cold spots" are when an entity extracts energy out of the air to appear or to move things. This is why, many times, battery-operated devices will suddenly discharge rapidly too. Well it doesn't prove heaven or hell, but it does suggest that the "soul" lives on afterward.
