Who knows. There are different theories.

1. Residual haunting - images and sounds are stored
somehow in the surroundings, and are replayed like a
video over and over again. There are reports where
the same image appears in the same spot over and over
again without changing. This could be merely a
physical phenomena

2. Intelligent hauntings - ghosts interact with
people, move objects, answer questions on audio.

Now how much energy is required to move an object and
what are the physics required to do it, is a mystery
to me. Apparently "cold spots" are when an entity
extracts energy out of the air to appear or to move
things. This is why, many times, battery-operated
devices will suddenly discharge rapidly too.

Well it doesn't prove heaven or hell, but it does
suggest that the "soul" lives on afterward.
Additionally, since everyone doesn't seem to become a
ghost when they die, or else we'd all be seeing them
daily, it might suggest they are in a sort of limbo,
not passing on to the next life.
