Vince, I have not read the entire thread on this and I apologize for just "jumping in."
I would suggest that you ignore what was done prior to your getting the computer. By starting from scratch and reinstalling whatever you need, you will be sure of what you have and what you don't have. I have always found this to be the best approach, especially when the person who did the work is no longer around. Of course, YMMV.
