I incurred 2,000 dollars worth of college level work when I went back to
work in arizona majoring in business administration with the idea of
pursuing a mba from capella university.
I had a really great job out there, but I reverse engineered a software
package that the existing people said would take 5 years to learn in 90 days
and so I had to give up on it for awhile.

To make a long story short, had a great job with a great bunch of people
working for assurant in scottsdale and I liked it, but it didn’t pay much.
I even had to make the decision to bring in an offshore company to take over
the day to day maintenance of the existing package. Just put that in so
ya'll wouldn’t think I'm totally against offshore because I'm not.

Anyway, a firm in austin tx called me up and offered more money and I would
be home instead of living out of motels and so I took it.
Turned out to be a sweatshop and I could have lived with that, but in 30
years of doing this stuff, you learn what works and what doesn’t and you
learn to build safety and security and maintainability into software
packages and we butted heads like two bulls in a china closet, so it wasn’t
a good fit.

I've been trying to get back into assurant, but I havent been able to do so.

Not having a degree is definitely a problem when it comes to management jobs
unless people know your work. There are so many folks with MBA's now that it
is tougher for a guy that didn't spend the time and money to get at least
the 4 year degree. I know it has been easier for me because I have a degree.
Of course that's why I got one in the first place, though.

Have you thought about going back to school? Maybe this is the right time to
do that.
