I run a kind of polling app that services email and print jobs. When idling it has 3 timers running and shows CPU less than 1% (37mb usage). When processing a job the CPU usage can go as high as 80-90% but then this machine is used solely for that purpose and it's only an old pentium III 750 with 256Mb ram. I can't see a problem with using a timer.
