Indeed, this rule of thumb comes to mind. But to apply it, do so completely. For example, whether I move to .Net or Windows Vista is basically means I'm playing the same newbie role as I am in moving to Linux and Python (or Pearl, or Java). So, wouldn't it be better to move to something which is less likely to give me the "shaft" in the future? (e.g. as MS has given the "shaft" to VFP developers)?
