(Moved to OT list...) I will agree that I have seen a much harder work ethic in foreigners....not all, but most that I've met. Many seem very disciplined. To me, this comes back to the fundamental problems in today's family (or lack thereof) society. Children are not held accountable nearly as much as they should, and discipline is virtually nothing of what it was years ago. Did we REALLY have such a discipline problem years ago with child abuse that removing spanking and other forms of corporal (but decent) punishment was absolutely necessary? I believe that foreign families instill much more discipline in their kids and likewise they're taught to respect their parents and elders, as opposed to the lawsuit-happy crappy generation that raises kids in the U.S. Heck, even my wife and I sharply disagree on this. I'm not for abusing any kids, nor do I prefer to spank, but there are times where I think as a parent you need to establish that "fear of God" kind of factor in your kids. It worked for me. I loved my dad tremendously, yet I certainly knew what NOT to do because I did NOT want to be spanked as a kid or even get yelled at by him. NEVER did I fear abuse from my dad...I just feared discipline. To me, there is a HUGE difference and they're not even close in relation. To others, you're barbaric if you even lay a hand on a child...even in a non-threatening way. imo, the fabric of the family continues to erode, and because of that, this country is going to hell quickly. imo, it all starts at home....and if home isn't what it should be, that leads to other problems. Ok....that's my OT post for the month. ;-) -- Michael J.
