I also see an advantage with HDD units where:
1) There is not a single point of failure,
2) No special software is needed to recover file-by-file backup copies,
3) The HDD units are portable and can be connected to any USB port
(preferably v-2.0),
4) No need to replace tape media annually,
5) The backups run far faster than tape, especially because the SyncBack
software can
determine if there have been any changes between Source Files and
Target Files and
intelligently backs up the files that are in need of being backed
up
as opposed to
backing up everything whether needed or not.
I try to get units that have 36 or 60 month warranties on the HDD inside the
enclosure (despite the 12 month warranty offered for the complete unit).
Any time I purchase a USB HDD unit I write the purchase date and location on
the enclosure shell, so I can handle warranty related repairs quickly. And,
I try to get the largest capacity available. My older 160Gb units are
getting a bit tight, the 500Gb units are doing fine. I use NTFS with
Windows disk compression on all units.
Despite how well this works in my environment, YMMV, and every situation is
different. My tolerance for the risk of losing 30 days of files is lower
than others. Hence, for some folks daily tapes rotated off site may be
better for them. For me, and most of my clients, the disk-to-disk solution
has worked out quite nicely.
