For Most 'Shared Services' Hosting Providers , you ain't gonna get enough
space or resources to install your own database server.
You share the database server with others on 'that physical machine'.
Usually, you get admin tools to make your own database fileset(s) in your
space. No one else can see your files except the admin for the Hosting
Provider.
You have control over your files, and can do what ever you want in terms
in indexing and writing stored procedures -
This situation is adequate most of the time. For sites that I do data on,
I also have a development area in house (life is fun, there is ... db/2,
oracle, mySql, postGreSql, msSql in my lab) so when I'm done with
development, I script out and xfer to a production area on the web. You
don't have to mimic that, you can have development areas in your shared
services space instead. It's your stuff, you lay out your db space the
way you want/need to.
However - If you want more, you pay more.
You can get your own machine, leased at a web hosting company - most have
really good deals. That gets you a Terminal-Server-like instance back to
'THAT MACHINE' .

If you wanna look at Lunarpages, click that efglunar link below - the
prices are fair and they've been around quite some time. I host there,
and if you click that link and buy a hosting package, I get a (small)
commission.
