Well.... there are the technical reasons. Firefox has had features like
tabbed browsing and add-ins for years, while IE added poor look-alikes
to some of those features only belatedly, and after MSFT repeatedly said
that they would NOT introduce a new version of IE until Vista shipped.

And there are the security reasons. Nary a day goes by without another
exploit being reported for IE - for a browser that's on version 7, for
pete's sake. It's architecture is fundamentally flawed and lends itself
to all sorts of mischief. I get the willies every time I have to use IE
for something - which by now is only when I visit the MSFT site. Why do
I have to download an unsigned ActiveX control in order to read a
whitepaper on FoxPro?

And there's simply the matter of choice. Walter Chrysler made a
perfectly good car back in 190n. Why did Henry Ford have to go and
compete with him? That sort of thing. People like choices, if for no
other reason than personal preference.

'tain't just about MONEY.

As far as those other programs... some of them just started because
someone was tinkering. There are oodles of libraries out there for Fox.
But I bet everyone on this list spent the time writing their own
(duplicate) for something....
