It's actually all about the platform. The dev tools, to MSFT, are a
necessary evil, required so that people write applications for Windows.
MSFT would give the tools away if they could, but then they'd be
'anti-competitive' with the likes of Borland, Sun, whoever. /snicker/

Talk with any dev tools pm and eventually you'll hear them admit that
the tools are simply a life support system so they can sell more copies
of Windows and Office. Look at the rot that has become SourceSafe or
HTML Help. The company could care less about your life as a developer.

It must be difficult to be a developer in the dev tools division with
that attitude. My hat's off to all of them (yeah, even the VB guys. <s>)

That, of course, is a crock of marketing bs. A number of years ago, I
laid out a plan to drive Fox sales to $100 million in 3 years, sent it
to a number of folks in a position to do something about it, and they
just laughed at me. It's not that they can't get a return on the
investment, they just don't care.

But we know that; no more whining here. But I'm learning new ball games
since they're not going to put any more air in their ball. <s>
