We stuck with two zones and a damper control. I sprung for the highest efficiency units and bought just one of each. Our house is 3700 square feet but is stacked with 1500/1500/700 square feet in three stories so it was well suited to using just one unit with a damper. There is full insulation between the floors and separating the two zones. The top two stories are one zone and the basement is another zone. The basement is so cool in the heat that it won't need much A/C and the top two floors are so well insulated they won't need much heating. The zones are the natural divisions anyhow. We also have 10 ceiling fans in the house to keep the air circulating. The A/C contractor was trying to sell me on two units but backed off when he saw the calculations. They're just not needed. I don't know what our energy bills will be but I expect them to be less than half the size of a standard house.
