Our property is an oak woodland. The home site has mature oaks on three sides, so there's actually quite a bit of shade. We excavated into a slope for the basement, and left all the trees in place. More than 80% of our windows face South and West, but they are all tinted with polarized glass and all shaded with trees. There are actually 25 windows and three glass doors facing south. Several of them are under a deck, and the rest are under a 5' roof overhang and behind a big oak. Even with the oak square in the way we can still see the ocean. We've been asked over and over again if we are going to cut down the tree, but all we did was thin the branches. The oak is over 200 years old so it would be pretty silly to cut it down.
