My Reply to them..........
Thanks. It's just a bit scary knowing that the end is nigh, but not knowing exactly when that is! I know that there is no switch that will stop it working. The frustrating part of it is not knowing exactly when Windows OS's will not be able to run the vfp runtime. Vista will run it. Will the next OS run it? If it does, then we can know that we have another 10 years after 2015. Customers are my problem. They hear that VFP is not supported after 2015 and then they get cold feet. I've just got to convince them that there is a possibility that "son of Vista" will run the VFP runtime. I can't see 32bit apps not being supported. 16 bit apps still are and dare I say it, 8 bit with emulation. The problem is that they will not want to invest in software that could stop working in their new PC with the latest windows OS after 2017 or whenever "Son of Vista" is released. Thinking about what you have said I would imagine that 2025 would be a plausible date. As you said below, DOS apps are still running! :o) A lot of the guy's in the community think that Open Source development tools will be the way to go in future as they tend to be able to run on various platforms and the community will upgrade the runtime to run on new versions of windows. Sorry, you are correct, 2017 for vista support. I must have misread it. I do appreciate you taking the time out to respond. Also including reply to your earlier... Vista support ends 2017. There will be other operating system versions and patches. Plans and details of those OSes is not known. I want to emphasize again, that there is no 'switch' that says this app will not work anymore. There are DOS apps that still work 15 years after DOS stopped being supported. 10 years ago we shipped VFP5. Your question is, will VFP9 work on an OS that will be released 10 years into the future. That is really an impossible question to answer. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Robert Jennings Posted At: 03 April 2007 18:17 Posted To: Profox Archive Conversation: Another life after VFP thread? Subject: RE: Another life after VFP thread? I assume we can still run 8 bit apps??? If the son of Vista can run 32 bit, then there should be no logical reason why VFP will not run. The only thing is, Microsoft will not commit to anything by saying "Yes, VFP will run on a Windows OS after 2015" If they can say that "Son of Vista" will run VFP 9 then we have 10 years breathing space. We can start re-writing in 2015 knowing that we have 10 years left. By then, Dabo will be the tool of choice for everyone here! lol Robert Jennings -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Andy Davies Posted At: 03 April 2007 18:10 Posted To: Profox Archive Conversation: Another life after VFP thread? Quite, and 'son of Vista' *will* have 32 bit support Andrew Davies MBCS CITP - AndyD 8-)# ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
