The core team was picked around a design to protect PostgreSQL, and insure the continuance of PostgreSQL. For example, each member of the core team works for a separate company, so it Microsoft acquired Red Hat and Tom Lang, it wouldn't have much effect on the overall support for the product, which would continue almost unaffected.
