A similar situation happened locally here a couple years ago-- a radio
host said something that taken out of the context it was said in
appeared to be 'racist' against the mayor of the city(I heard it live
and never connected it until the next week when it was in the news).

He got fired.

They replaced him with some no-talent hack from central NY. They
eventually had to hire the original host back, as the station was
suffering considerably from lost ad revenue...

Nationally it might not play out the same way, but this certainly
happens-- sponsors cry 'fire him' one day, and 'hire him!' the
next.....
