The guy I worked for intentionally made things cryptic. The harder it was to figure out, the better it was for him.
I told him, look, you're experiencing tremendous growth with this new contract you have, but we need to redesign some portions so that we can quickly bring the new guys up to speed instead of them wasting their time trying to figure out what he was doing.
