I installed the office and garage cabinets in our old house, but never
tackled a kitchen before. The cabinets I did were completely sturdy and
lasted the 10 years they were up, though. The contractors are warning me it
isn't going to work, but we don't have the budget. We are $100K over budget
on the foundation, framing, and site work, so I had to slash out everything
to the bone just to finish the house. We couldn't borrow the additional
money. We tried.

The oak butcher block from IKEA looks pretty in the store but I was certain
it would look like trash after a couple of years so I am rather afraid of
it. But again there is no budget even for a standard laminate countertop at
this point. We have to go really cheap and get something better later.

I'm going to be looking for that granite coating you're talking about. It
seemed like the butcher block would be a good foundation for something else
at least.
