I remember right out of college, a guy wanted me to write a program that would run on an inexpensive commodore 64 that would mimick a HP Terminal and output the error messages to a voice sythesizer to be broadcast on a PA System.
He wanted me to give him a hard, fixed time estimate and pay me 8 bucks an hour. If there were any overruns, I would eat it. If I needed to buy terminal emulator source, I would eat that too. So I countered with, "OK, but I want a percentage of the sales". He laughed at me. Needless to say, he never developed the product.
