Last night's "The Real Deal" on TLC had them blasting their IT guy the whole show. I have no idea whether the IT guy was incompetant or not, but the comments to him like "We can renovate a house in a week and you should get the computer network up in the same amount of time" shows how ignorant the non-computer professional can be.

My point, with an extreme case as an example (I _did_ once have a guy tell me that $500 was WAY TOO MUCH for a custom accounting system, considering that Dac-Easy was only $49.95), was that customers have to be 'professional' as well. There are still a lot of folks with unreasonable expectations (oftentimes, simply because they're ignorant, not because they're greedy or unethical or stupid), and those folks are bound to be disappointed. Last year I worked on a case where the folks are very smart, knowledgeable, etc. Too smart, in fact, because they decided to dole out parts of the project instead of dumping ten years of accumulated knowledge all at once. I can see their pov. And near the end of the project, they provided one more requirement that they had mentioned but hadn't gone into detail. It was the equivalent of "We need you to move this wall back a foot. Yeah, the wall behind the stove. Yes, the load-bearing one. How hard could it be to move just one wall a foot?" They thought they were a week or two from release to beta testing when they opened this can of worms.... It's too damn early on Sunday to argue coherently, particularly when I don't even have my workout in yet. But the point is that uneducated customers are part of the equation, and when you let them register complaints, their complaints are going to be uneducated too. It just takes one or two unwarranted complaints that make it past the gauntlet (say, from an asshole lawyer who wanted something for nothing..., oh, wait, that's redundant) to really make a mess of one's reputation. And while I'm sure there are plenty of well-meaning and smart folks at the BBB, well, the same could be said at the USPTO.
