        Well, I guess if you think this reads better:

"He first came across free software in the late 1980s, when he was  
charging for the service of burning freeware onto media and  
distributing it from home as a sideline while working at Unisys."

        Personally, I think the original reads much clearer.

        Yeah, and before the internet, you had to have disks mailed to you.  
I remember people selling disks of games, fonts, etc.
