AIPAC is presented in this thread as an all powerful Jewish lobby behind the
mad rush to war in Iraq.
I'd just like to add a bit of context to the discussion. Several liberal
groups are also active with regard to the political debate
over Israel and the middle East, these include The Religious Action Centre
of Reform Judaism, Americans for Peace Now,
and Israel Policy Reform. These groups have scored recent victories over
AIPAC particularly in regard to the Palestinian
Ant-Terrorism Act. Arab-Americans are also a growing political force in
Ohio and Michigan. Granted their political
donations are dwarfed by the contributions of pro-Israeli groups but the
landscape is changing and America remains a wonderful
adversarial democracy. Further it should be noted that 77% of Israeli's
think the war in Iraq was a mistake and 87% of Jews
in America voted for the Democrats. I got these numbers from the Economist
magazine. As a footnote the last love fest hosted
by AIPAC received the attentions of a noisy protest organized by orthodox
Jews who denounced both AIPAC and Israel. Graham.
