That's correct. They see things the other way: that they have a
vision of a unified society under the Koran, and these infidels are
destroying their world.
I share your values, but I don't share your statement that these are
in any way "universal" values. Throughout all of history, including
all but the most recent part of US history, they were not and still
are not the standards most cultures embrace.

Of course they are distorted. I simply substituted a few words for
those that the Muslim fundamentalists would choose. The result is
something that sounds terribly hateful and ignorant when viewed from
a western perspective. This should give you an indication as how you
sound to them. People in the west who say things like that sound just
as sick and twisted to them as the modified words I wrote sound to us.
