I share your values, but I don't share your statement that these are
in any way "universal" values. Throughout all of history, including
all but the most recent part of US history, they were not  and still
are not the standards most cultures embrace.

I don't believe these values should be the exclusive domain of rich
countries.  I think they are universal good values and that given the chance
most people would aspire to them. Our beliefs accommodate Islam. I don't
believe the terrorists have anything going for them but hatred and violence.
An interesting quote from a women in the refugee camp in Lebanon was
translated by the BBC as "These people only believe in a better life in the
next life".  They are zealots not reasonable people and hold no appeal to
ordinary Muslim people.
