I had a German teacher who was a lunatic (I know, redundant). He  
claimed that any sport that didn't involve contact just wasn't  
"real." The kicker was that he was the *tennis* coach! He justified  
his own sport by saying "I tell (his tennis players) that when they  
are in the front court to jam the ball down (the opponent's) throat."  
Yes, that is a direct quote, or at least as close to one as I can  
come up with 35 years later.

This guy also had a German Shepard (naturally) named Wotan, after the  
head Nordic/Germanic god. He bragged that he was the only one who  
could control the dog, and he had to beat it with chains to  
(alternately) control it and toughen it up.
