You're not the only one. I live in Milwaukee. Folks around here (they call themselves "good ol' German frugal", others call them 'cheap') have the same problem. Particularly with some guy who works out of his house (that's French for "no overhead, so your rates should be lower, right?") I haven't sent an invoice to a local firm in five years, cuz local firms don't want to pay the going rate, regardless of my guru-ness (that's legacy-guru-ness, by the way.)
