There are digital faxes (Category 4?) but they only work with ISDN and other digital faxes but have some improvements in colour, resolution etc; Oh and they cost a lot. I haven't eve known anyone buy one yet.
Of the old type the standards are supposed to be backward compatible and agreed during the handshake preamble. This sometimes gets turned off new fax machines. Certain colour (old style) fax machines (multifunctional units mostly) can send in colour to a like unit but there doesn't seem to be a standard. Old style faxes come in a couple of modem speeds 33K tops (I think), again this is (should be) agreed at connection. The one I find odd are the number of people that think that fax numbers are not normal telephone numbers.
