I certainly plan to generate revenue from my PostGreSQL efforts, even while using VFP (for now) as a transitionary front end solution. Once I do migrate from VFP for my front end to some Open Source development solution (Dabo?), I still plan to generate revenue.
Value exchanged between myself and a client is still value exchanged, regardless of my own cost basis. It is up to me to either share in the cost reduction (if any) in providing my Open Source based solution with my clients or not. A Windows Server (especially with the additional 2003 Server Terminal Services license fees) is what is killing my cost basis, vs a nice Linux Server platform. For me, the movement from VFP to PostgreSQL/Dabo is more for the cost effective scalability and Thin-Net capabilities of PostgreSQL, and due the abandonment of VFP (no 64 bit version coming) by M$ as a viable development solution in the not too distant future. If I am merely going to cut M$ out of the Server and DBMS part of the pie by going Open Source, the benefit is more to my client, as my solutions will still carry a similar fee structure. I can just provide it more cost effectively using PostGreSQL and Linux. And, yes, I am doing just fine with my fee structure, and expect to continue to do so after migrating to Open Source solutions.
