I used to work on a DARPA program dedicated to lowering power requirements for computers. It's amazing all the approaches that were taken.
http://www.darpa.mil/ipto/Programs/pacc/index.htm Scheduling limiting memory limiting screen colors stepping down and up processors compilers that would create executeables based on power efficiency not on time efficiency With computers taking up a huge chunk of the nation's power requirements, any breakthroughs in power efficiency affects the whole country. Computers should be able to "rev up and down" based on current processor load.
