I'm guessing that they aren't going to be making any money at $3 per pop. I would think this is a razors and razor blades type scenario. The problem in my mind is what is the "razor blade" that they are selling to China?
The past money makers for M$ was Windows, Office, and SQL Server. So for Windows + Office at $3 a pop, or $10 a pop for government, where's the profit there? SQL Server? Open Sourced databases are so freaking good nowadays, plus other competition from other closed source vendors, this has to be a stagnating market. Video games? XBox 360 repairs, anyone? If I was to guess, I'm thinking M$ is trying to hold on to market share while they are trying to figure things out where their future profits will come from, in China and other countries around the world.
