I work nights and weekends in an ice hockey pro shop. Monday night I got a
call from one of the other guys who works there. The owner was out of town,
and the POS computer was dead. It was locked up when he came in, so he
powered it off and on and got NOTHING on the screen. No lights, no sounds,
nada. Dead.

So he went over to Walmart to get some manual receipts, and while there ran
into a lady who had worked on their system before. He expained the problem
to her, and she told him to bring it over to her that night and she'd fix
it, saying it was problem with the hard drive boot sector.

Did I mention the system was DEAD???? How could it be a hard drive boot
sector? I broke speed limits getting there, knowing that the system was
not backed up. The last thing I needed was for this lady to get her hands
on that hard drive!

There were 2 other systems in the back, missing various parts. One of them
is now missing a power supply, which I installed in the POS computer. Up
and running in under 30 minutes. My efforts easily saved the owner $100 had
it been taken a store that knew what they were doing; and probably saved all
if his data had it gone to that other lady.

What'd I get for it? 30 minutes on my timecard at $9 an hour.

This time.

Next month we're going to transform his mess of computer parts into a REAL
network, purchase 2 new computers, update his POS system and give him remote
connectivity from home. And he'll be paying me more than $9 an hour. :)
He's knows what I can do in a pinch, he knows I'm worth it.

Sometimes it pays to do someone a favor. Unfortunetly it doesn't seem to
happen often enough...

I fixed computers , created a website, designed flyers and buisness cards
for this woman I worked with, all for free. No this person also had a
second job cleaning apartments so I asked her one day if she would come
around and clean mine. She said sure no problem it will cost you $80, she
got offended when I said I wanted her to do it for free.
