I'm being insecure in my skill level.

I've been using "subselects" for what seems like years, and I was just
thinking that maybe they were considered "old fashioned" by now?

Do you mean my method compared to yours, my method compared to Dave 
C.'s, or what?  I'd go for the JOINs myself rather than the subselects 
when possible.  Anders Altberg was great for answering those kinds of 
performance-best questions!
