The article here <http://www.regdeveloper.co.uk/2007/08/08/novell_ceo_certification/> goes into where Linux is today and how it has to work with M$ for any real growth over time.
Despite nearly a decade of success for Linux, one fundamental issue has not been solved by the community: helping ISVs overcome the expense and time needed to port applications to different distributions that use different APIs and packages. This is something that I see as a RPITA as a developer. How many different distros do you target for as a developer of a vertical? Say you were going after the home checkbook app and felt that Intuit won't play in the Linux world for another 5 years. How much do you have to tweak for each flavor of an OS out there? I don't know and have always thought of that in the background as to why the killer app in Linux is harder to market. This comes from the Java write once and tweak often depending on OS.
