Well, maybe not "kill" it, but perhaps cripple it unless one is hitting
machines via the New & Improved ODBC that are running 2003 Server, or Vista
as a Peer Server <g>...

Seriously, I remember very well when M$ first came out with 2000 Pro and
2000 Server. Lots of folks suddenly had huge problems connecting their
older Win95 and Win98 PCs over a LAN between the older O/Ses and the 2000
machines. M$ first said folks "ought to upgrade" all the older machines to
2000 to correct the problem. M$ got a lot of pushback on that, so a little
later folks were being told they had to have a WINS Server to point all
PCs/Servers to in order to resolve a PC Name with their assigned IP Address,
as 2000 Pro/Server no longer supported NetBIOS Name over Ethernet
resolution. I know a few companies that ended up upgrading to 2000 just for
connectivity since they had no Windows Server, hence no WINS Server
capability. NETBEUI had died its own "natural death" with 2000 Pro/Server,
so there was no scampering over to that tried and true "solution". Of
course M$ claimed they had "always" suggested using WINS in any network
environment - thus they did nothing wrong <g> with their technology shift.
I guess the point is that this would not be the first time M$ used a shift
in technology to drive upgrades or a movement to an alternative connectivity
solution.

I have since then started using WINS with any LAN where there is a Windows
Server class O/S, whether there is an apparent problem or not. Since then I
have not had any connectivity issues other than due to firewalls or routers
not being set up correctly (or unplugged cable, incorrectly configured WiFi,
etc. <g>). I have not yet had to set up a backup/secondary WINS Server, but
for real busy LANs that is also recommended by M$. Seems for Peer LANs with
no Server I have been lucky enough to not run into problems as I connect
them using Static IPs, as opposed to PC Names, with drive share setups.
