A unix or linux computer would make a great platform for the
Archiveopteryx email archive application. I have never personal used
this application, but I'm thinking about giving it a try.

Archiveopteryx is an Open Source solution to archiving email using .
Archiveopteryx application is written in C++ , and uses a PostgreSQL
database server. The application has been tested usning Linux and FreeBSD:

Excerpt from Installation link:

We test the build on Linux and FreeBSD, so you may encounter some errors
if you compile elsewhere. We make few demands of the platform, so any
errors are likely to be minor, and we'd be happy to help you resolve
them. (Given enough demand, we'd be happy to add other platforms to our
test ensemble.)

Below is a link about how to use Sendmail; although, Postfix, Exim, and
Qmail are also supported.
