That would be true for the sales tax, which flow back to each state.  
The US federal tax system taxes yearly income base on rates that 
increase as income progresses upward.

I'm not having any luck finding how much of the total federal revenue 
come in under each tax bracket, and I really don't think it would answer 
my question anyway; because, the max tax bracket kicks in at around 
$349,700 for married couple filing jointly.  That really not much money 
these days.  I did a search on middle income folks, but the result would 
be dependent on how you defined poor, middle income, and rich folks.

Many people that file income taxes have negative taxable income, even 
some very rich folks, so they would need to be eliminated from the 
statistics.  Probably the best way to answer my question would be a 
table that show total Federal Revenue for 2007 broken down within 
taxable income ranges with $10,000, then $100,000, and the $1,00,000 
increments.
