So they tell me, "well we'll just open the gate manually". and I said, "you're
going to have someone there 24 hours a day?".

If that system goes down, opening the gate will be the least of their
problems.... in fact they may want to keep it closed to keep out the angry
customers who can't get their belongings.

Subject: [NF] Storage facility computers and software

I have a client who built a self-storage facility. They purchased electronic
gate software and accounts-receivable software that interfaces with
quickbooks. When a customer doesn't pay, their gate key is locked out.

They had someone else set up the system initially.

I was called over there yesterday because one of their employees
downloaded a porno spyware and trojan onto their only controlling computer.
After removing all their spyware, which took installing Adaware, spybot
Search and destroy, and windows defender to get all the worms, trojans and
spyware removed, it dawned on me that they have no backup computer to run
their operation should this one fail.

They are balking at setting up a redundant system with a few PCs and a
redundant server.

I think they're in big trouble if they have a catastrophic computer
failure.

Does anyone know what other facilities do? I can't believe a computer
that controls all the functions of the business has no redundancy.
