I know it's a good idea just in case the yanks decide to turn off their
system but I think this project is probably doomed to failure due to
bureaucratic bungling, increased costs and a lack of commitment - even
though it may well potentially be a superior system.

The American hold on GPS came around in the early 90's when it was released
to the general population by Reagan and adopted primarily by the airlines.
The huge lead times involved in getting any aviation equipment type approved
and the associated expense involved for a new system when a cheap reliable
one exists already will price Gallileo out of the market - unless it is
subsidized by the EU i.e all the rest of us mere mortal taxpayers. As Alan
Sugar said when he created Amstrad: "You don't have to be the best...but you
DO have to be first"
