Like Malcolm's answer, I say "don't starve" but don't make any decisions 
working with an entity you'll regret or would rather not do business 
with.  It's easy for me to say this because I'm not in your shoes, but 
I'd tell them you'll work on retainer or they pay up front in blocks of 
10 hours or something like that.  Got that idea from TR and/or Whil's 
DevGuide3 book.   Also make sure you don't sign some agreement whereby 
you surrender any of your rights to your own competing product/work.
