My experience has always been the other way round (although installing 
Ubuntu has still been very painless and well worth it). Then again, I 
was installing Ubuntu on legacy hardware, requiring some manual driver 
fiddling, or in a Virtual PC VM requiring xorg.conf to be edited because 
Virtual PC only supports 24-bit colour. So I suppose the latter is not 
even an Ubuntu issue really, and 7.10 even picks that up by default now 
anyway.
