It was never "proven". What happened was that the sugar
manufacturers produced some self-funded experiments that were
criticized at the time by serious scientists. They targeted
cyclamates first, and then saccharin. Since the legislators enjoyed
fat juicy campaign contributions from the sugar industry, they banned
cyclamates and required warning labels on saccharin.
It is still bad for you, but then again, so is sugar. It just isn't
the poison that industry-funded "research" claimed it was.
