To the best of my recollection they were the earliest form of UPS. I can't
remember any details but essentially an electric motor spun a large flywheel
which in turn drove a generator which supplied the power. There was a
clutch between the flywheel and a diesel engine which was held off by mains
power. As soon as mains power failed the clutch snapped in, the flywheel
turned the diesel engine to start it whilst still driving the generator and
the diesel took over the task of driving the flywheel.
