MySQL may be open source but it's a very restrictive licence.  It
costs zero if you use it for an open source project, but the licence
is quite expensive if you use it commercially - £369 *per year*.  Not
sure the dollar price but £369 =~ $738.

I always thought of MySQL as a bit of a 'toy' SQL server anyway (never
used it, but purely from reading articles and research).  PostgreSQL
(or even SQLite!) seem a much better choice.
