I recall that at a M$ conference in Long beach, CA. Balmer had given a few presentations, with his usual super-hype and dramatic fervor. Lots of energy was buzzing all around. I went to one presentation that covered networking, web servers, and NT Server. Near the end of the presentation a person asked why a recent patch to NT Workstation now limited his ability to have more than 10 concurrent connection to his machine, whereas prior to the patch he could use NT Workstation perfectly well as a web server "for testing purposes" with far more than 10 concurrent connections. The response was that M$ found NT Workstation became unstable with more than 10 connections, therefore folks wanting to host and/or test web sites would have to move to NT Server! I could not believe the smug answer, and the uproar with the crowd pretty much put an end to any further questions. It was clearly a bullshit answer, and everybody knew it. M$ was just going for a money grab, and broke a capability under the guise of preventing a perfectly stable system from "becoming unstable." I was just as surprised that the speaker's teeth did not shatter as the lie came rolling off his silver tongue. Not quite a riot came of it, but it was very obvious that the emergence of the Internet and web hosting was about to undergo a dramatic change for Micro$coff. That was my first really clear indicator of how M$ would begin to do business. The squeeze was on.
