The fact that the problems are occurring early in the morning leads me to
believe the drive may be asleep. (I know this sounds funny, but I'm serious)
Maybe before backing up, you should make the drive list it's files or
something like that, so the drive is getting some activity. This makes sense
because you indicate there are no problems during the day when the drive is
being accessed frequently. You might even want to schedule a batch file that
list all the files on that drive and redirects the output to the external
drive in txt file.
